Having spent two incredibly exhausting days facilitating a planning session, I’m relieved to hear that the 35 people involved actually believe something will now happen!
How easily people cloak themselves in cynicism, distrust and negativity whenever the word ‘planning’ is imbedded into a sentence. It’s surely a sign that plans typically result in wads of paper rather than results.
Personally, I don’t have the money, time or interest in creating wads of paper. I’m interested in ideas that make things happen. I’m amazed at how easily people allow planning to veer into talk fests and I'm bored by cynicism.
Leadership is not just about the vision, creative thinking and ideas. The measure of a successful planning session is whether it has produced specific, clearly understood steps that people can take the very next day. These steps must lead the way to the future.
